WABC, Sliwa Celebrate Anniversary Of The Guardian Angels.

To commemorate the 39th anniversary of the founding of Guardian Angels by Curtis Sliwa, a new documentary will be screened at the Stage 17 performance studio at Cumulus Media talk WABC (770) New York, where Sliwa hosts the just-launched “Curtis + Crosby” show with Rita Crosby.

Sliwa and his Guardian Angels, originally known as the “Magnificent 13,” conducted their first Safety Patrol of the New York City subway system on Feb. 13, 1979. Known for their signature red berets, the group grew from 13 members to an international presence now in 140 cities in 14 countries.

“Vigilante: The Incredible True Story of Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels,” directed by David Wexler, “gives one an inside look into what it was like to live in New York City from 1979-1992 when crime, crack and chaos was everywhere,” Sliwa said.

Sliwa began his radio career at WABC in 1991 and has spent 22 of his 24 years in the business at the station. He was partnered over the years with attorney Ron Kuby, both in mornings and more recently in the noon-3pm slot the duo assumed upon Sliwa’s most recent return to the station in 2014. Kuby was let go from WABC in May 2017. After a brief pairing with attorney Eboni K. Williams, Sliwa was partnered with veteran journalist Cosby for the new program that debuted last week.
